Log in to CM/ECF. On the startup page, click on Reports > PACER Report.
NOTE: PACER stands for Public Access to Courts Electronic Records. PACER is managed by the PACER Service Center. User-created reports are subject to the PACER public access fee.
The Case Search screen opens in a browser, providing several options for running a PACER report. The basic Case Search options are specific case number or range of case numbers, and party or attorney name.
The search results display in a matrix. Click the hyperlinked case number in the left-hand column to view the Second Circuit docket report. Click the case title in the left-hand column to view a list of parties and attorneys and the judge in the originating court. Click the hyperlinked case number in the right-hand column to view the docket report in the originating court.
Click the Advanced Search hyperlink on the Case Search screen to use additional search options: case type (using a pull-down list), origin (using a pull-down list), originating case number, nature of suit (using a pull-down list), and a variety of date-range searches. To make multiple selections in a pull-down list, hold down the Ctrl key on the keyboard while clicking. The results list can be sorted by case number or filed date, in ascending or descending order.

Click the hyperlinked case number in the right-hand column to view the docket report in the originating court.
The top menu bar, which appears on each search screen, provides several document-specific search options. The Calendar and Opinions menu options are not used by the Second Circuit.
Click Orders/Judgments in the top menu bar of any search screen to use search options for orders, judgments, and opinions. Search options include: report type (checkboxes), specific case number or range of case numbers, search (all checked report types) since last report, search by day (filed date or entry date), and search by month (filed date or entry date).
The results display in a matrix. Click the hyperlinked case number in the left-hand column to open the docket report. Click the case title in the left-hand column to view a summary report that includes a list of parties and attorneys and the judge in the originating court. Click the document icon in the PDF column to open the order/judgment or opinion. The Description column displays the text of the docket entry.
To view documents filed in the case, open the docket report and click the corresponding hyperlinked number in the docket report. For example, to view appellee's motion to dismiss, click the hyperlinked number 42 in the example docket report below.
Clicking the hyperlinked number 42 in the docket report opens a screen showing all three documents related to the motion to dismiss: the motion and two supporting documents. Click the related document icon to open a document, or click the Combine All Documents button to combine the three documents into a single document.
Click Briefs in the top menu bar of any search screen to use search options for locating briefs filed in the Second Circuit. Search options include case number or range of case numbers, and date-range searching by filed date, date the brief was entered or altered, or both.
The results display in a matrix. Click the hyperlinked case number to view the docket report.
Click the related document icon in the Link to Brief column to view the brief. The Download Confirmation screen opens, displaying PACER billing information for the brief.
Click the Show PDF Header box to view document information on each page of the PDF. Click the Accept Charges and Retrieve button to open the brief.
